White Face
Like the salty loneliness
of
sailors
in foreign lands,
the white face of a clown
circling
the square,
leaving in the guests’ hotels
the colors of his makeup
and boxes
of powder,
and leaping into the arena,
without obvious age or form,
his frozen smile
upon his lips
the hiding place
of his tears.
